Today's Stoic Thought

“An hour of deeply contemplating your own moral failures will leave you feeling much more forgiving of the foibles of others. ”

Reflecting on our own shortcomings can help us empathize with the imperfections of others. For example, when we catch ourselves being impatient with a coworker, we can pause and recall a time when we too were overwhelmed and in need of understanding. This reflection can foster compassion and patience in our interactions with others.

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
Matthew 7:3-5 ESV

The verse from Matthew highlights the importance of reflecting on our own faults before judging others, reminding us to remove the log from our own eye before pointing out the speck in someone else's eye. This aligns with the Stoic idea of contemplating our moral failures to cultivate forgiveness and empathy towards others.
