Today's Stoic Thought

“So, concerning the things we pursue, and for which we vigorously exert ourselves, we owe this consideration – either there is nothing useful in them, or most aren’t useful. Some of them are superfluous, while others aren’t worth that much. But we don’t discern this and see them as free, when they cost us dearly.”
Seneca

In modern life, we often chase after material possessions, status, or recognition with great effort and sacrifice. However, upon reflection, we might realize that many of these pursuits do not bring true fulfillment or lasting happiness. For example, spending excessive time and money on buying the latest gadgets or fashion trends might seem important at the moment, but in the long run, they do not add significant value to our lives.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21 ESV

The verse advises storing treasures in heaven rather than on earth, highlighting the importance of prioritizing valuable and everlasting pursuits over material possessions. This aligns with the Stoic idea of discerning the true worth of our pursuits and not investing excessively in transient things.
