Today's Stoic Thought

“Not reacting to deliberate provocation is a superpower. If you have the awareness and self-control to not react predictably, there is nothing that can put you off your path. Remember: the only enemy you need to fear is your own self – your lack of awareness and loss of control. ”

In today's world, social media is often filled with deliberate provocation intended to rile up emotions. Choosing not to engage in arguments online and instead maintaining composure is a modern application of this Stoic idea. For example, when someone deliberately tries to provoke you with a controversial comment, practicing restraint and choosing not to get pulled into a heated debate demonstrates strength and self-control.

Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
Proverbs 16:32 ESV

The verse from Proverbs speaks to the idea of having self-control and being able to keep calm even in the face of provocations. It emphasizes that one who can control their own emotions is better than one who can conquer a city. This aligns with the Stoic idea of not reacting predictably to provocations and staying on the path of virtue.
