Today's Stoic Thought

“If you seek tranquility, do less. Or (more accurately) do what’s essential – what the reason of a social being requires, and in the requisite way. Which brings a double satisfaction: to do less, better.”
Marcus Aurelius

In modern life, we are bombarded with endless tasks and distractions. By focusing on what truly matters and doing less of the unnecessary, we can experience a sense of tranquility and fulfillment. For example, instead of trying to juggle multiple social events in one weekend, choose the most meaningful one and fully immerse yourself in it, enjoying the experience and connections more deeply.

but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:42 ESV

This verse speaks to the idea of doing what is essential and necessary, which aligns with the Stoic notion of focusing on what reason requires. In this context, Jesus praises Mary for choosing to focus on what truly matters, listening to his teachings, instead of being distracted by many tasks like her sister Martha.
