Today's Stoic Thought
“It is essential to make oneself used to putting up with a little. Even the wealthy and the well provided are continually met and frustrated by difficult times and situations. It is in no man’s power to have whatever he wants; but he has it in his power not to wish for what he hasn’t got, and cheerfully make the most of the things that do come his way.”Seneca
In everyday life, this principle can help us manage our expectations and find contentment in what we already have, rather than constantly striving for more. For example, instead of lamenting about not having the latest smartphone model, we can appreciate the functionality of our current device and focus on utilizing its features effectively. This mindset shift allows us to cultivate gratitude and resilience in the face of challenges or desires beyond our control.
Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.
The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians emphasizes the importance of contentment and the ability to be satisfied with what one has. This aligns with the Stoic principle of not wishing for what one hasn't got and making the most of the things that do come our way, promoting a sense of inner peace and self-control which are key aspects of Temperance.
