Today's Stoic Thought
“Set aside a certain number of days during which you shall be content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with coarse and rough dress, saying to yourself the while, “Is this the condition that I feared?””Seneca
In modern life, we can practice gratitude by intentionally simplifying our meals or wardrobe for a few days, reminding ourselves that we can thrive with less. For example, choosing a few days to eat basic, inexpensive meals can help us appreciate the abundance we usually have and reduce our attachment to luxury. This practice can cultivate resilience and show us that we can be content even with less than we are accustomed to.
I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.
This verse from Philippians reflects the idea of being content with little, as the apostle Paul expresses his ability to be content in any circumstance. The concept of contentment with simplicity aligns with the Stoic pillar of Temperance, which emphasizes moderation and self-control in desires and appetites.
